The Norwood School

Big Issue Campaign

Night Time Charity Walk Friday 13th October

Yr 8’s are reading Stone Cold – a book by Robert Swindells. a realistic young-adult novel which is set on the streets of London, the story switches between Link, a newly-homeless sixteen-year-old adjusting to his situation, and Shelter, an ex-army officer scorned after being dismissed from his job, supposedly on 'medical grounds'.

The book has moved many staff and pupils to think about ways that we could support the many homeless we see on London’s streets and so Miss Halnan and Ms Johnson, from the English Department, are organising a Night Time Charity Walk on Friday 13th October with 30 students to raise money for the Big Issue.

We were also delighted to have Stephen Robertson (CEO of the Big Issue) in school who delivered a talk to Y8 students. 'It was very intertesting said Samaya and Sammy, ' he told us some stories about how hard it is for people who suddenly become homeless through no fault of their own. How it has an effect on every aspect of their lives and how difficult it is to get out of such a horrible situation. He also told us about people who had been really brave and had managed to regain their lives because of the Big Issue. We are both joining the walk on Friday and hope to raise lots of money.'

Lila Goodrich said – ‘I'm doing the Night Walk because I think it's really important to help those who are homeless especially now the weather is getting colder.’

Rachel Stocking commented that reading Stone Cold has helped me understand how terrible it is for people who are homeless. I want to help them by taking part in the Night Walk.

We will be thinking of everyone on Friday, wishing them luck on their long 7 ½ mile walk and hope that they manage to collect as much money as possible for an excellent cause.
