Sixth Form Textiles Students at FAD Fashion

Lower Sixth Textiles Students have started this years series of Saturday schools run by FAD Fashion.

We know, from experience, that this is a fantastic opportunity for them to work with other creative designers, meet industry professionals and develop skills that will be crucial to those of them who are thinking of a career in the fashion industry.

Maria from FAD told us, 'After last Saturday’s intensive creative research day at the Victoria and Albert Museum, this week the Fashion Futures students got hands-on with introductions to pattern cutting, draping, and sewing on the industrial machines – all key skills they’ll need as they develop their designs in the weeks to come.

We were happy to welcome new volunteers from ASOSKaren Millen and Seraphine,  who helped the students to get to grips with new vocabulary, tools and techniques.

In the draping session, students worked in 3D to create a range of silhouettes and fabric manipulations on the stand.

The next task was working to transform a half-scale dress block into a working pattern: moving darts, manipulating the skirt shape, drafting a facing and adding seam allowance.

The next task was to cut out the pattern pieces in calico and piece them together to construct a half-scale dress.  Many students were using the industrial equipment for the first time – but after some careful practice with foot control, they were stitching away like pros.'

If you want to know more about the project or  see how the students are getting on then follow them on social media @FADCharity for more news and updates, as well as our Instagram stories live every Saturday.

Well done to all those who are attending!

We can't wait to see the results of all your hard work.
