The Norwood School

Phoenix Book Award

A Wonderful Celebration of Reading

Anyone with a spare moment yesterday popped into the theatre to join in with the hundreds of children who were all taking part in the Phoenix Book Award Celebrations. Miss Taylor and Mrs Triffillis, our intrepid library staff  worked incredibly hard to organise the event and Norwood were proud to take the lead for Lambeth, with ten other schools joining us for the morning. It was a fun filled event with quizzes, readings, the opportunity to hear children review books, receive prizes and certificates, the chance to meet the actual authors and the opportunity to be the first to hear who had actually won! Jane Elson spoke to the children about her book 'How to Fly with Broken Wings' and Anne Booth talked about her book 'Dog Ears'. The winner, a new author from America, sent over a video link to address the audience. Dan Gemein Hart's book - 'The Honest Truth', touched everyone's hearts, especially when he spoke about the character from the story having been inspired by a real life friend and true story. He was clearly very humbled and proud to have even been nominated but even more surprised to be the winner.

Thank you again to everyone who made the celebration such a special one and one that we know the children will remember for a long time to come.
