Strike Action Tuesday 2nd May 23

28th April 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,
Re: NEU Strike Action – Tuesday 2 nd May 2023

I hope this letter finds you well and that you’re looking forward to the long bank holiday weekend.
We would like to update you again on arrangements for the forthcoming NEU national and regional
teacher’s strike action. As you are aware, the vast majority of our teaching staff are part of the NEU union or
affected by closures in other schools. So, unfortunately, we cannot plan to open the school as usual on
Tuesday 2nd May 2023.

Please remember that the planned Year 8 Parents Evening has moved from Thursday 27th April to Thursday
18th May.

As you are also aware, given the smaller numbers of teachers available on this day, we are prioritising onsite
provision again for students preparing for or taking their upcoming national examinations and those
considered to be vulnerable.

Therefore, our plans for each year group on Tuesday 2nd May are as follows:
The school site will be closed to all students in Years 7 to 10 on Tuesday 2 nd May 2023. Students with an
EHCP or with Child in Need status will receive a call from our support staff during the day to check they can
access work and check on their well-being.

Sixth Form students are able to work on independent study in the Sixth Form Study hub from 9:30 am until
2:30pm or can remain at home to work if they prefer.

Targeted Year 11 students will be invited to take part in English and Science intervention. They will need to
sign in and gather in the canteen at 9am, the day will finish at 1pm.

ANY STUDENT EXPECTED IN A PUBLIC EXAM MUST ATTEND.
Tuesday 2nd May 2023 - Sixth Form Business (Part A 25/04)

There will not be a breakfast or break service offered. Year 11 should be in full school uniform and unless a
child has Free School Meals - they should bring their own refreshments.

Additional arrangements for all year groups
It is recommended that students complete work for the subjects that they would normally be timetabled for
on these two days. They can select from a wide range of appropriate resources, both Key Stage 3 and 4 here
on the Oak Academy website.

If your child receives Free School Meals, a voucher code, which can be used in local shops, will be
shared directly with their parent/carer via emails for Y7-Y10 (Y11 and Sixth Form can also access
free school meals onsite).

Unlike other days, please direct any communications to a member of SLT. Teaching staff who are
striking (this may include year leaders) will not be able to respond to queries.

We understand that this information will continue to disrupt the work plans of many of you. We also know
that our teachers continue to be committed to providing the best education for all our students at The
Norwood School. We thank them for their continued hard work and commitment to our school community
as we plan for this challenging day.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding,
Kind regards,

Ms Nicholas
Senior Deputy Head Teacher
