The Norwood School

Computing and ICT

Purpose

We want our children to understand and play an active role in the digital world that surrounds them, not to be passive consumers of an opaque and mysterious technology. A sound understanding of computing concepts will help them see how to get the best from the systems they use, and how to solve problems when things go wrong. As a school we value computing and truly believe that every school-leaver should have an understanding of computing & IT.

Key Principles

Here in the Norwood School our students have the opportunity to explore the world of computing and information technology in a range of different ways. Their thoughts, ideas and creative abilities will be stretched to new heights as they attempt to solve problems using high-level computational thinking skills. Our flexible program of study will enhance students’ skills and ensure their areas of development addressed throughout their time in our school. With most of KS3 having a strong focus on project based tasks – students are able to produce IT solutions they can really be proud of, from; developing websites using HTML, programming their own games using Scratch & Python, developing apps and control systems using MicroBits & even designing their own animations using Adobe Flash. Alongside our project-based units students will also study how technology is having a massive impact on the world we live in today, be it; e safety, ethical, environmental or even legal issues. Our broad curriculum is a great success and typifies the Norwood ethos of enjoyment, stretch and challenge for all.
