THE ENGLISH CURRICULUM
RATIONALE
Fluency in English gives students access to other subjects; much of the disciplinary literacy and skills taught are the foundations of other subjects, such as comprehension, analysis or communication which in turn allow students to develop their own metacognition, self-regulation and evaluative skills. English broadens students' awareness of the world around them and their place within it, giving them insights to different places, cultures, times and issues. It teaches them the power of language both in terms of how others have used it to achieve progress and change and how they can use it themselves, thus giving them the key to better understanding themselves and those around them.
INTENT
Through the exploration of key literary works and a rigorous focus on the English language, we aim to:

Develop students to be fluent, creative and critical readers, writers and speakers.

Allow them to question not only what they read, say and or write but to consider how or why those thoughts, inferences or interpretations have been created.

To allow them to express themselves clearly and confidently in both their written and spoken word, utilising grammatical and syntax rules to strengthen and emphasise their points and ideas.

Boost their cultural capital through experiencing different types of literature and creative or factual writing and in turn developing their own ability to express, persuade, argue, justify or craft creatively.

Present to students the best of the best in terms of writers craft, vocabulary and structure so that they can begin to synthesise this themselves.
