The Norwood School

Let's make 'Design and Technology (STEAM) Development' happen

Dear Parents, Cares and Guardians,

During the last year we have been working with enthusiasm to develop our Design & Technology curriculum at The Norwood School, much to the excitement of our students.

Design & Technology encompasses Food, Graphics. Product Design and Textiles. So far in our journey, we have recommissioned the food room and workshop, had all machines serviced, invested in new equipment such as woks, chopping boards, a band saw, line bender and fret saw; as well as 5 new sewing machines for use with KS3 students.

D&T staff have completed their Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene certification, as well as their workshop Health & Safety qualification. We have developed our schemes of learning and in September we started to deliver our new KS3 Technology curriculum which has included rotations in Food and Product Design. Students have thoroughly enjoyed their new lessons and it has been wonderful to see the workshop and food room buzzing with students learning practical and life enriching skills

To further enhance the department, we would like to purchase some more specialist equipment, such as a 3D printer, A1 laser cutter, vinyl cutter and a dye sublimation printer. These machines will allow students to develop their CAD/CAM skills, and can be utilised across the visual arts.

We are therefore very excited to announce that our Rocket Fund, crowd funding page is now LIVE and can be found by following this link: https://www.rocketfund.org/the-norwood-school-steam

A laser cutter would allow students to design and make professional products in a range of materials, it could also be used by A- Level Graphic students to create packaging or branding products, or by Textile students to make their own laser cut fabric.

A 3D printer would enable our students to learn advanced skills and concepts. It is a great way to develop cross curricular STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) projects that focus on solving problems and manufacturing creative & innovative design solutions.

We know it has been a challenging year for many, so please do not feel obliged, yet we would be most grateful if you could donate to our campaign and/or share this far and wide among your family, friends and any businesses you may have contact with.

Many thanks for your continued support.
